Functional MRIs can be used to map the sexual interest of participants. In this research images are presented that are not consciously recognised due to their short duration and ‘masking’ by the use of a longer distracting image. However, the image time is sufficient to show the pattern of activity which occurs with sexual interest. Deviant sexual interest is one of the strongest predictors of future offences – but this research also raises important ethical questions.
